Best Buddies Spotlight, August 2004
By Emily Garrison
Virtual Volunteer Manager, e-Buddies
This year, at the Best Buddies Annual Leadership Conference, a special program called B.U.I.L.D., (Buddies United In Leadership Development), brought approximately 15 Buddies to Indiana University for a comprehensive training on leadership and public speaking.
Participants learned how to spread the message of Best Buddies to others through formal speaking engagements, meetings and recruitment. BUILD trainees also learned self-confidence through their training and will be able to speak to any audience about the impact Best Buddies has had on their lives.
Graduates of the BUILD Basic Training may have the opportunity to join the Buddy Outreach Corps and become future Buddy Ambassadors including speaking at Best Buddies International special events! They deliver the Best Buddies message of friendship to those around them in a way that staff and volunteers wouldn't be able to.
Only Buddies can truly appreciate the impact Best Buddies has had on the lives of persons with intellectual disabilities. Through them speaking to others about Best Buddies; they can influence donors, volunteers, families and potential Buddies to join, support, and endorse Best Buddies International, as well as e-Buddies.
Through Best Buddies we can not only create lasting friendships that impact lives, but also teach others about our experiences and influence them to join the Best Buddies community.
Enjoy the rest of your summer and we will see you in September!
