I grew up in the Washington, D.C., area, and holiday time there brings cold weather and starry skies.
So, when I moved to Miami, Florida, it was hard to adjust to holiday shopping wearing shorts and a t-shirt. To evoke the holiday spirit I was used to, I learned to look for similarities between Decembers past and present. Once I looked past the surface details of palm trees versus evergreens and sunshine versus snow, I found the deeper meaning of Christmas unchanged.
To me, e-Buddies teaches us to do that same thing – look beyond the surface differences between people who have an intellectual disability and those who do not, and find the humanity we all share. When we make that effort, we truly do find ourselves connected by the bridge of friendship.
Happy holidays to you! May this season of light bring you joy.
