Last year, Best Buddies adopted the slogan, “I See You.” In the United States, our customary greeting is, “How are you?” In Central Africa, “I See You” is used instead, and conveys the idea that one acknowledges another as an equal and a fellow human being.
I like the simplicity of this statement, as well as the deeper meaning it conveys. It reminds me of another wonderful saying, by Antoine de Saint Exupery: “It is only with the heart that one can see clearly.”
At Best Buddies we teach people how to look at others with the heart, not just the eyes – to look past surface differences and connect through our common humanity.
My New Year’s resolution is to strive to see with my heart more.
Happy New Year to you! May 2006 bring us all joy.
