One of my favorite Best Buddies events is the Annual Valentineís Dance hosted by the George Mason University Best Buddies chapter in Virginia. Hundreds of college students and hundreds of adults with intellectual disabilities gather to celebrate this holiday, and the special friendships they share year-round. In a beautifully-decorated room on campus, they enjoy food, dancing, and games. This yearís event is February 14th, and I canít wait!
I mention this not only because February brings us Valentineís Day, but because I think this party, standard as it is as parties go, is anything but usual. In fact, it is unusual because it brings together people who, without Best Buddies, would never meet. This dance demonstrates the commonality all people share, regardless of current disability status.
I hope you have the chance to attend the party, or some other Best Buddies event in your town. And, on February 14th, as on every day, hope you have the chance to e-mail your e-Buddy and let them know how much they mean to you.
All the best,
Lisa Marlene Derx
