e-Buddies in Action!
This is a new segment of the e-Beat! Each month we will highlight a school or agency involved in e-Buddies. Our hope is that this will be an opportunity to share some of the challenges and triumphs encountered through group participation in e-Buddies!
This month, we spoke with Laird Mintz from El Valor in Chicago, Illinois.
How long has your group been involved in e-Buddies?
We have been involved since October 2005. We started with the help of our e-Buddies Training Corps intern, Erin. She was very helpful and supportive and everyone feels very grateful to her.
How many members are currently matched with e-Buddies?
We have 8 from our group that I oversee, with several more managed by another counselor.
What are some key challenges you have faced and overcome?
Time! We’ve had success staggering the times that the participants answer their emails, so half the group answers on Mondays and the other half on Thursdays. Also, some participants don’t type. For these participants, I am their personal secretary. Also, there are other participants who are at a loss for words or ideas about what to write about. Again, I try to jump start their thinking by suggesting things to write.
How do you make e-Buddies work with your group?
I like to think we are by and large a motivated group. We know we have a mission and goal to answer our e-mails. This gets us “pumped up!”
What have your group members gained by participating in e-Buddies?
e-Buddies has helped our participants think of things to say about themselves, and their e-Buddy helps each of our participants to value their own personal life by noticing that others are interested in them.
Do you work with a group of e-Buddies participants? We'd love to feature your group here! Please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
