e-Buddies in Action!
This is a new segment of the e-Beat! Each month we will highlight a school or agency involved in e-Buddies. Our hope is that this will be an opportunity to share some of the challenges and triumphs encountered through group participation in e-Buddies!
This month, we spoke with Patti O’Haire from UPARC in Clearwater, Florida!
How long has your group been involved in e-Buddies?
Our group has been involved since December 2002.
How many members are currently matched with e-Buddies?
We have 26 students currently enrolled in e-Buddies.
What are some key challenges you have faced and overcome?
I have 2 students who wanted to be in e-Buddies but were unable to type, so one of my students who likes to type is typing their emails for them.
I have some students who can’t spell but are able to type, so they tell me what they want to tell their e-Buddies, I write it down, and they type it.
I have one student who can type but did not put a space between words. I use a yellow marker on his paper to put a line between each word. There is a yellow dot on the keyboard’s space bar so that he knows to hit that key after each word.
I have some students who have trouble finding the Shift key (to capitalize) and the period key. I put a red dot on the Shift key and use a red pen to underline the words that need capitalization. I also put a green dot on the period key and use a green pen to mark where a period belongs at the end of each sentence.
How do you make e-Buddies work with your group?
I have divided my 26 students into 5 classes that way I can work with each student easier and if they are absent they can attend a different class.
What have your group members gained by participating in e-Buddies?
Many of the students have increased their computer, spelling and reading skills. They have made wonderful friendships with people from all over the United States that they never would have met if it were not for e-Buddies.
Do you work with a group of e-Buddies participants? We'd love to feature your group here! Please contact us at email@example.com.
