e-Buddies in Action!
This is a new segment of the e-Beat! Each month we will highlight a school or agency involved in e-Buddies. Our hope is that this will be an opportunity to share some of the challenges and triumphs encountered through group participation in e-Buddies!
This month, we spoke with Julie Albers from Marcos de Niza High School in Arizona!
How long has your group been involved in e-Buddies?
We have been involved for 3 years.
How many members are currently matched with e-Buddies?
We have 11 students matched, one student waiting for a match, and other students that want to join.
What are some key challenges you have faced and overcome?
Getting the students more independent with the steps that go along with e-mailing, not receiving an e-mail from their e-buddy, having to re-match my student with another e-buddy, trying to find a good time for the student to e-mail each week...
How do you make e-Buddies work with your group?
I use class time or Conference Period (Wed. and Thurs. before school) to help my students e-mail their e-Buddy. We set up a schedule so the student knows what day each week they are to e-mail their friend.
What have your group members gained by participating in e-Buddies?
My students have gained another friend with common interests. My students have gained confidence because knowledge is power....now they know how to log on to the computer, go to yahoo or hotmail, log in to their e-mail account, read the new e-mail and respond. e-Buddies has enhanced their lives...it is a friendship through the help of technology....my students look forward to checking and e-mailing their friend once a week...they often ask to check their e-mail more than once a week....it is their favorite classroom activity....it is educational but they don't see it that way-it is FUN for them!
Do you work with a group of e-Buddies participants? We'd love to feature your group here! Please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
