Free Online Resources
Computers are expensive. Not only does it cost a lot to purchase a computer, but then you have to pay for Internet access and essential software applications. These costs can add up!
Thankfully, there are plenty of resources out there that are helpful and completely free! You just have to know where to find them. Here are some useful online resources to check out.
Free Dial-up Internet Access
As much as they try to hide it, NetZero DOES still offer their free dial-up Internet service. If you can’t afford to pay for Internet access at home, or if you will be traveling and require Internet, you can sign up and get 10 hours of free dial-up Internet access. To get started, please visit:
Free Office Suite
Do you need a word processor, but can’t afford the brand name software packages? Open Office is an open source office suite, similar to Microsoft Office, except that it’s 100% free! It includes word processing and spreadsheet applications that are fully-compatible with other, more expensive office suites. To get started, please visit:
Protecting your computer from viruses is very important. An antivirus program is only good if it is updated regularly to protect users from new threats. Unfortunately, many anti-virus programs require that you purchase a yearly subscription to their update services. Over the life of your computer, this can get expensive.
If you’re concerned about keeping your computer secure, but you can’t afford to purchase update subscriptions, check out Grisoft’s AVG Antivirus Free Edition. AVG Free is a very capable antivirus that provides regular updates at no cost. Download your own copy from:
Free Spyware Protection
“Spyware” is any programming that installs itself on your computer during the course of regular Internet browsing. Spyware is generally pretty harmless, but it can sometimes adversely affect the performance of your computer and put the security of your data at risk.
To combat spyware, try Lavasoft’s Ad-Aware SE Personal! Ad-Aware is a free, regularly updatable utility that is designed to scan your computer for spyware and remove it. To download your copy at no cost, please visit:
