e-Buddies in Action!
This is a new segment of the e-Beat! Each month we will highlight a school or agency involved in e-Buddies. Our hope is that this will be an opportunity to share some of the challenges and triumphs encountered through group participation in e-Buddies!
This month, we spoke with Schuylerville High School in Schuylerville, New York.
How long has your group been involved in e-Buddies?
We’ve been involved now for almost a year.
How many members are currently matched with e-Buddies?
We have five members matched.
What are some key challenges you have faced and overcome?
We needed to get administrative approval to use e-mail at school, and once we got approval, the computer administrator had to adjust the computer settings to allow us to log in.
Using e-mail is a new experience for most of our students, so we’ve practiced a lot with going to the login screen, logging in, creating an address book, and composing and replying to messages.
How do you make e-Buddies work with your group?
Teachers and support staff help the students as needed in composing their letters – the thoughts and ideas come from the students, and we help them type them or write them down to type in later. We schedule at least 2-3 times per week for checking and writing e-mail.
What have your group members gained by participating in e-Buddies?
They have definitely gotten more comfortable using the Internet and e-mail. They love having someone to write to and communicate what they’ve been up to and talk about their common interests.
Do you work with a group of e-Buddies participants? We'd love to feature your group here! Please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
