My heart is filled with sadness as I write this, as today is the day after the terrible tragedy at Virginia Tech. Virginia Tech is my school, the place I spent four happy years, the place I return to annually as a proud member of the English Department’s Distinguished Alumni Board I know Virginia Tech to be a community rooted in knowledge, discovery, and friendship. I believe that, with time, that community will heal.
Friendship at this moment is more important than ever. This week, I have been e-mailing with friends who attended Virginia Tech with me and with friends on the faculty there still. I have found it comforting to feel those bonds of experience and shared memory this week, and to understand more profoundly how deep those connections are.
Those friendships are not broken by this, indeed, they are stronger. Virginia Tech will endure, and as Nikki Giovanni said, “We will prevail.”
All the best,
