e-Buddies in Action!
Each month, we are happy to take the time to highlight a school or agency that is involved in e-Buddies. Our hope is that this will be an opportunity to share some of the challenges and triumphs encountered through group participation in e-Buddies!
This month we spoke with Cynthia Randall of Opportunity Enterprises in Valparaiso, Indiana.
How long has your group been involved in e-Buddies?
We were signed up in mid November.
How many members are currently matched with e-Buddies?
What are some key challenges you have faced and overcome?
Some of the key challenges were waiting to be assigned a buddy, scheduling time to respond to them, and for some, overcoming a sense of shyness in order to yield fulfilling communications.
How do you make e-Buddies work with your group?
I try hard to keep up with the group, and ask if they have received e-mail, and responded. I also bring them to my desk and help them get on-line if they lack time at home or in computer class. I try to inspire them to communicate their activities and desires, and guide them in formulating questions to ask of their e-Buddy.
What have your group members gained by participating in e-Buddies?
The group members benefit from increased communication, and the practice of the social and computer skills required. They gain the sense of belonging as they can compare similarities of liked activities with their e-Buddy. They also are able to broaden their horizons as they become acquainted with people in other regions of the country, who have had different experiences in their lives. One e-Buddy has two horses, and is matched with one of our consumers who loves pets. He finds it fascinating that his e-Buddy owns and rides horses.
