e-Buddies in Action!
Each month, we are happy to take the time to highlight a school or agency that is involved in e-Buddies. Our hope is that this will be an opportunity to share some of the challenges and triumphs encountered through group participation in e-Buddies!
This month we spoke with Pam of Alternative Education Center in Virginia.
How long has your group been involved in e-Buddies?
The group has been involved for 8 years.
How many members are currently matched with e-Buddies?
We currently have eight matched members.
What are some key challenges you have faced and overcome?
One challenge we have had is keeping track of who has checked, responded and sent their e-mail. We now keep a simple chart beside the computer, and as the students check, respond and send their e-mail, they check their name off. A new chart is put up weekly.
We used the e-Buddies curriculum with some of our students to get them used to their e-mail program. This was a tremendous help.
Our students want to check and send e-mail daily, but we donít have the time. They now check their e-mail first thing on Monday morning.
How do you make e-Buddies work with your group?
Each student has a notebook with copies of each e-mail they receive and send. Students check their e-mail first thing on Monday morning. Most of them know their e-mail I.D. and password, but we also have it written down in the front of their notebook. They print 2 copies, one for their notebook and one to take home. Some students need help answering /composing e-mail. We help them read their e-mail and then we write exactly what they say. After they finish composing, we highlight all capital letter and punctuation marks. They type it and before sending, we check to make sure the address is correct.
What have your group members gained by participating in e-Buddies?
My students have gained so much through e-Buddies that it is difficult to list everything. The main things are the friendships that have developed over the years. My students feel they have a true best friend. They confide in them, share their joys and sorrows, talk about their life, their plans for the future, anything that is on their mind. They know they have someone who is there just for them.
