e-Buddies in Action!
Each month, we are happy to take the time to highlight a school or agency that is involved in e-Buddies. Our hope is that this will be an opportunity to share some of the challenges and triumphs encountered through group participation in e-Buddies!
This month, we spoke with Anthony of the Brother of Charity Services, Unit One in Limerick, Ireland.
How long has your group been involved in e-Buddies?
We have been members of e-Buddies for a year and a half.
How many members are currently matched with e-Buddies?
Currently, we have 6 members who are matched with an e-Buddy, and they check their messages weekly. We also have a member who has just joined and is currently waiting to be matched with an e-Buddy.
What are some key challenges you have faced and overcome?
One major challenge that we are currently experiencing is that some of our members are not receiving replies from their e-Buddies, and this can be quite difficult as they find it hard to continue to send correspondence without having received a reply. We find that e-Buddies are doing their best to rectify this situation.
One other challenge that we faced here was we did not have a full-time broadband connection for the Internet, and this made it difficult to keep in regular contact with e-Buddies, but we have overcome this problem now and have regular access.
How do you make e-Buddies work with your group?
We have a timetable in place to check and reply to emails. We check this daily, Monday to Friday. At present our members all need assistance with accessing their accounts, and we hope that in time some members will be able to access e-Buddies by themselves.
What have your group members gained by participating in e-Buddies?
It helps our members to get to know people from different parts of the world even though they are miles apart. They can discuss things like the weather, their families, pastimes and hobbies.
The 7 members we have currently compare information amongst themselves, on their individual e-Buddies. Our members have also gained knowledge and improved their skills on how to use the keyboard, mouse, accessing and sending email, as they have a reason to have daily use of the computer and the internet.
Do you work with a group of e-Buddies participants? We'd love to feature your group here! Please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
