Dear Friends,

July 1st will find me in Sacramento, California, working to educate public officials about the importance of Best Buddies. How appropriate a time to be doing this, so near to our Independence Day celebration. I know that, on July 4th, when I see fireworks flashing, I will think of what freedom means to someone with an intellectual disability.

Despite what some may think, freedom for those with disabilities is much like freedom for those without - the chance to find meaningful work, to live in an environment of their choosing, the opportunity to have friends, including a love relationship. What is different for those with disabilities is that too many people don't think they deserve the freedom to choose the very things that the rest of us cherish.

While you celebrate July 4th, please remember that by engaging in an e-Buddies friendship, you are giving freedom to someone with an intellectual disability. That alone is worth a fistful of lighted sparklers.

All the best,
Lisa Derx
Vice President
