e-Buddies in Action!

Each month, we are happy to take the time to highlight a school or agency that is involved in e-Buddies. Our hope is that this will be an opportunity to share some of the challenges and triumphs encountered through group participation in e-Buddies!

This month, we spoke with Cheryl Galbraith of Pegasus Community Project in Toronto, Ontario in Canada.

How long has your group been involved in e-Buddies?
At least 6 years, if not 7. I cannot believe how the time has flown by!

How many members are currently matched with e-Buddies?
We have 10 active matches with several more members wanting to register.

What are some key challenges you have faced and overcome?
Access to the internet has been the biggest challenge - we have been plagued with cyber fairies making our connections difficult.

How do you make e-Buddies work with your group?
Time on the computer is placed on our daily schedule. Each participant needs a different type of support. Some are independent, some have support staff assist with reading and composing emails, some need help with typing.

One participant does all her e-mail correspondence in a room separate from the computer. She reads her emails and composes her replies at the table, then her support staff goes to the computer to do the actual typing on her behalf. This way she maintains valuable friendships without actually using the computer which is an issue for her.

What have your group members gained by participating in e-Buddies?
Certainly the friendship they develop with their e-Buddy is the most important and hoped for gain. The surprising benefit has been the way our group members are now perceived by their extended family and friends. People were amazed the participants would enjoy and use e-mail so much. This has led to many more e-mail connections for them. Parents, siblings, aunts, uncles and friends from out of town are all e-mailing with our participants.
