e-Buddies in Action!

Each month, we are happy to take the time to highlight a school or agency that is involved in e-Buddies. Our hope is that this will be an opportunity to share some of the challenges and triumphs encountered through group participation in e-Buddies!

This month, we spoke with Robert Jenkins of Norte Vista High School in Riverside, California.

How long has your group been involved in e-Buddies?
We just completed our second year with e-Buddies.

How many members are currently matched with e-Buddies?
We currently have 7 students who are matched.

What are some key challenges you have faced and overcome?
Some of the challenges that we have faced is with the internet/network at school. This past year our high school has had many construction projects that has caused interruptions with the network working (cut wires etc.) Another challenge was getting family support and participation. I encourage parent and their child to e-mail at home as well as at school. Unfortunately many students do not have computers or the internet at home.

How do you make e-Buddies work with your group?
It has been difficult but it works. I have help from my Instructional Assistants as well as the Chapter's e-Buddies coordinator to assist the students with typing. I have also set aside a block of time each day for the students to work on the computer. I have one student who has mastered logging into his e-mail and e-mailing each day which is very exciting and rewarding for him.

What have your group members gained by participating in e-Buddies?
The students had gained some self independence by working on the computer and e-mailing. They are excited when they can log into their e-mail accounts on their own accord. The students are gaining a better understanding of the huge world beyond their own and they have enjoyed learning from their e-Buddies across the nation and world!
