e-Buddies in Action!

Each month, we are happy to take the time to highlight a school or agency that is involved in e-Buddies. Our hope is that this will be an opportunity to share some of the challenges and triumphs encountered through group participation in e-Buddies!

This month, we spoke with Lawanda of The Bold New ARC Downtown in Jacksonville, Florida.

How long has your group been involved in e-Buddies?
My group here at the ARC has been involved with e-Buddies since November of 2005.

How many members are currently matched with e-Buddies?
I have a total of eight members that are currently matched in e-Buddies friendships.

What are some key challenges you have faced and overcome?
I really don't have any key challenges presently but in the past, I encountered one. One challenge that I faced was with staffing issues. Some of the members of e-Buddies lost there matches due to that issue. I overcame that by taking the members that were left to allow them to continue what they enjoyed doing. This is how I became involved.

How do you make e-Buddies work with your group?
I make this program work by allowing each member to come to me at least once a week so they can e-mail their e-Buddy. They get very excited when they come.

What have your group members gained by participating in e-Buddies?
The group I have has gained a lot of confidence and independence as well as self-esteem since they have been with e-Buddies. They really love e-Buddies and I love helping them out with it.
