Dear Friends,

Halloween evokes images of Jack O'Lanterns and ghosts, of fall leaves crisping under my feet as I walk my nephews around the neighborhood for trick or treating. They are young enough to still be excited at this autumn ritual, and a little frightened, too, if the house we are approaching has been decorated a little too vigorously. Once they realize the man in the scary mask is really the Dad of one of their friends, they relax, and eagerly reach for whatever candy is being handed out.

It reminds me of those who have not had the experience of knowing someone with an intellectual disability before joining e-Buddies. They are nervous at first, apprehensive about what to say, how to address someone whom they perceive as different. Once they get their first e-mail back, though, they relax. They suddenly realize this person is a person first, underneath whatever assigned label may be masking that basic fact.

Thank you for being part of the e-Buddies community. Wishing you lots of treats all month long!

All the best,
Lisa Derx
Vice President
