e-Buddies in Action!

Each month, we are happy to take the time to highlight a school or agency that is involved in e-Buddies. Our hope is that this will be an opportunity to share some of the challenges and triumphs encountered through group participation in e-Buddies!

This month we spoke with Bonnie of Santa Rosa Adult School in Milton, Florida.

How long has your group been involved in e-Buddies?
About six years.

How many members are currently matched with e-Buddies?
We currently have three, with three more who are interested.

What are some key challenges you have faced and overcome?
The main challenge is getting the students to take the responsibility to write to their e-Buddies on a regular basis. The ones who have been successful have encouraged others to be interested in the program.

How do you make e-Buddies work with your group?
Sharing the excitement with others, bragging to authority figures (within earshot of the students) about how successful they are at writing. Helping those who are afraid of making a "mistake" and not spelling correctly get over their fears and feel comfortable with the process of writing. Showing them how easy it is to correct mistakes on the computer. (They seem to feel more comfortable when they realize the computer can even help them with spelling (those red and green underlines [in grammar and spellchecking] are a subtle hint that can be corrected easily.)

What have your group members gained by participating in e-Buddies?
Improved self esteem, confidence in their own abilities, improved writing and reading skills. The students express a sense of belonging to a group that creates camaraderie among their peers.
