Ask Emerson

Dear Emerson,

I was just matched with a new e-Buddy, and I want to tell my buddy all about myself. Am I allowed to tell my e-Buddy what city I live in?

Signed,
Cautious in California

-------------------------

Dear Cautious,

As you know, safety is a HUGE priority for e-Buddies, and the e-Buddies Code of Conduct does outline some limited restrictions on what information you can tell your e-Buddy. Specifically, the Code of Conduct states that e-Buddies are not permitted to exchange personally identifying information, such as phone numbers, mailing addresses, or real e-mail addresses. You can read more here.

You'll notice that the Code of Conduct does NOT specifically prohibit saying the city that you live in. In fact, because e-Buddies matches are always made between participants that live in different parts of the country, it's quite likely that your e-Buddy will be very interested to hear all about your town or city, as it is not someplace that they have ever been.

So, to answer your question, YES! Please feel free to tell your e-Buddy the name of the city or town that you live in. Just be sure NOT to mention your street address or phone number!

If you want to share something with your e-Buddy, but you aren't sure if it is appropriate for e-Buddies or permitted under the Code of Conduct, please feel free to contact an e-Buddies staff member.

Signing off,
Emerson
