e-Buddies in Action!

Each month, we are happy to take the time to highlight a school or agency that is involved in e-Buddies. Our hope is that this will be an opportunity to share some of the challenges and triumphs encountered through group participation in e-Buddies!

This month, we spoke with Christine from Oviedo High School in Florida.

How long has your group been involved in e-Buddies?
We started at the beginning of this school year.

How many members are currently matched with e-Buddies?

What are some key challenges you have faced and overcome?
Getting everyone signed up was a challenge. At first it was easy to make mistakes with logins and passwords. I have an index card for each student that has their school ID and password, e-mail address and password, the e-Buddies e-mail address, and the name of their e-Buddy. Most of the students have it memorized now, and some use the cards every time we get on the computers. If students forget a password, it helps to have the cards.

How do you make e-Buddies work with your group?
I teach a Special Diploma English class. When my students write their e-Buddy once a week they must write at least five sentences in their letter. Students have learned how to come up with something to write about, even when they have not received a new letter from their e-Buddy. Also, I work with students on using the correct format as much as possible, using punctuation and capital letters. Several of the students have learned to always capitalize "I" in a sentence. Such as, "I am going to the movies on Friday."

What have your group members gained by participating in e-Buddies?
They are learning how to communicate effectively in writing, and they are gaining new friendships!
