Letter from the Director Ask Emerson Best Buddies Spotlight Conversation Starters e-Buddies of the Month e-Buddies in Action Where Are They Now?

Dear Friends,

Yesterday, I was reading an interview with a favorite author of mine, Marilynne Robinson, when something she said made me think of e-Buddies. It was these words:

"I think that the real emotional content of lives tends to be negotiated in terms of small gestures, little courtesies towards one another, little provisions for one another's comfort, and that whether we're conscious of these things or . . . we see them as the fabric of our lives with others, and I think that a great deal of generosity and care and love and so on are communicated in what we would call prosaic gestures, and that's just lovely to me."

With e-Buddies, the small gesture of asking about someone's day and responding to the answer has a large impact on the recipient's quality of life. Taking an interest in someone's recounting of their weekend activities or what they plan to do after dinner demonstrates in a profound way that that person is important, that person is worth listening to, that person matters.

Thank you for the lovely, prosaic gestures that make you part of Best Buddies movement of friendship and inclusion.

All the best,
Lisa Derx
Vice President
