e-Buddies in Action!

Each month, we are happy to take the time to highlight a school or agency that is involved in e-Buddies. Our hope is that this will be an opportunity to share some of the challenges and triumphs encountered through group participation in e-Buddies!

This month we spoke with Leslie from Rosedale- The Greater Opportunities (GO) Project located at St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas. The participants from GO are both e-Buddies and are members of Best Buddies High Schools.

How long has your group been involved in e-Buddies?
Our group has been involved with the Best Buddy program for 5 years. Our students are special education students who are between 18-22, they come from a variety of high schools in south Austin.

How many members are currently matched with e-Buddies?
We have 10 students who are matched with St. Edward's students during the school year. They do not stay matched in the summer due to the vacation, but they will get back to e-mailing when school resumes in August.

What are some key challenges you have faced and overcome?
Some of our students don't have transportation to get to the special events. We make special effort to make sure that everyone knows about the special holiday parties etc. It is nice being located on this campus since our buddies are college students who can stop by and have lunch with their buddies or just hang out and visit.

How do you make e-Buddies work with your group?
Our buddies can hook up with us during the day when school is in session. Some of my students text or e-mail their buddies to stay in touch. We also refer students who are graduating to the program so that they can have a Best Buddy for social activities after they exit the school system.

What have your group members gained by participating in e-Buddies?
Our students have gained friendship and skills in how to interact appropriately with others and in social settings. Our students thrive on the attention and interactions that they have with their e-Buddies.
