e-Buddies of the Month

Each month, we will profile one of our many fantastic e-Buddies pairs! If you would like for your match to be profiled, please contact us!

This month we are featuring Jordan and Jennifer!

Jordan is from California and his e-Buddy, Jennifer, is from Pennsylvania. They have been e-Buddies for almost 5 years, having been originally matched in October 2004. Since then, they have exchanged more 1,400 e-mails. Wow!

What are some common topics of discussion between you and your e-Buddy?

JENNIFER: The arts, architecture; family, friends and other loved ones; challenges we are currently facing in life; travel; our passion for music; Jordan's campaign to help others realize self-advocacy; my work as a school counselor and university instructor; our belief in helping others; healthy living and lifestyle; current movies and television shows and future goals.

JORDAN: Jen and I love to talk about music, cinema, and other aspects that are of cultural interest to the both of us, including art. Both Jen and I like to talk about our professions as well as what is going on in our cities, several miles apart, as well as what problems that we are facing, too. I really enjoy this, because I find it to be very therapeutic.

What do you enjoy the most about being involved with e-Buddies?

JENNIFER: The fact that e-Buddies put me in touch with a person who has such passion for music, the arts, and self-advocacy, that it is inspiring. Jordan tells me about his key note talks at self-advocacy conferences and songs he has written. These songs are created to encourage others with disabilities to stand up for themselves. In many ways, Jordan and I enjoy interacting and helping people in similar ways. It is great having someone to depend on to be there throughout the years, as we share each other's life through correspondence.

JORDAN: I enjoy learning more about the person, and if there has been something wrong, Jen is always a patient and very forgiving person. I love her as a pen pal and as a friend.

What makes your friendship unique?

JENNIFER: Jordan and I have very similar interests. We love the arts! Jordan knows lots of trivia about the theatre and music. We live on different coasts but are able to stay in touch often. My e-Buddy and I have corresponded for a long period of time. Jordan and I come from different religious backgrounds. We are also different ethnicities. It has been great learning more about each other's faith and how we celebrate holidays. Jordan and I talk about cultural similarities and differences. We learn from each other. Also, we both share a high regard for Eastern philosophy.

JORDAN: I really appreciate Jen's understanding as well as her patience in times of a personal crisis. Jen is a very unique person, always going forward, and never letting anything to stand in her way.

What is something surprising or funny about your experience with e-Buddies?

JENNIFER: Jordan helps me teach my Personal Development class at Princeton University. He sent me a special meditation CD that I play for my students. This CD has helped numerous pupils prevent and relieve stress. It has also assisted students in learning more about the Eastern art form of meditation. My students love hearing about how Jordan and I met through e-Buddies. I tell this story as an introduction to students selecting their own civic organization (to research and present to the class) relating to a cause which ignites their passion. It is funny that Jordan, living thousands of miles away, can help students in such a way.

JORDAN: Sometimes the humor between us makes me chuckle, and feel a sense of relief, that we can make it in this world, in times of trouble. She brings the joy within me.

Is there anything you would like to share about your friendship with your e-Buddy?

JENNIFER: When signing up for this volunteer organization, I anticipated and was excited about helping another individual. What has happened in this case is that Jordan helps me. Smile! We help each other. Jordan gives great advice. His emails always brighten my day. e-Buddies has been the start of a great, long-lasting friendship.

JORDAN: For over 5 years, Jen and I have learned a lot about each other. Jen is really my cup of tea, especially during times of personal crisis. Jen never scolds, she always gives advice to me, and I really appreciate her honesty, which is the best policy. I love her as a wonderful pen pal person as well. I think that we can relate as well, given her interest in music and cinema. She respects my having a disability, and has been a wonderful person to share and to give an e-mail kind of a hug and a kiss, too. I am very glad to have Jen as an e-Buddy. She is the tops!

Congratulations to Jordan and Jennifer, our e-Buddies of the Month for August!
