e-Buddies in Action!

Each month, we are happy to take the time to highlight a school or agency that is involved in e-Buddies. Our hope is that this will be an opportunity to share some of the challenges and triumphs encountered through group participation in e-Buddies!

This month, we are featuring our participants from Bloomington High School in California.

How long has your group been involved in e-Buddies?
We have had e-Buddies since 2004, I would think. We started then with about 6 or 7 matches.

How many members are currently matched with e-Buddies?
Currently, we have 9 matches and 5 awaiting matches.

What are some key challenges you have faced and overcome?
One of the challenges is to get enough time in the instruction day to help students read and respond to e-mails. Our major solution is to have our e-Buddies Coordinator have a Teacher's Aide period with us to help with most of the process.

How do you make e-Buddies work with your group?
We make it work by getting students excited to enter this independent world of communication online and by putting some of these skills into student's IEP goals for which to strive successfully.

What have your group members gained by participating in e-Buddies?
Students have received, many times, a window into the world of others farther away in the country and a peek at college life from the perspectives of their e-Buddies. Also, they have gained the awareness of reading and responding on topic to a continued line of communication with another. It is a great social skills builder.
