e-Buddies in Action!

Each month, we are happy to take the time to highlight a school or agency that is involved in e-Buddies. Our hope is that this will be an opportunity to share some of the challenges and triumphs encountered through group participation in e-Buddies!

This month, we are featuring the e-Buddies group from ALIVE in Concord, California. Group leader Dalepresha P. answered our questions.

How long has your group been involved in e-Buddies?
Our group has been involved in e-Buddies for 6-7 years.

How many members are currently matched with e-Buddies?
Currently, we have 14 members matched with an e-Buddy.

What are some key challenges you have faced and overcome?
Getting each client/matches to be consistent and e-mail on a regular basis. To overcome this challenge we as a Day Program have made e-mailing our e-Buddies an activity that is offered everyday. We find that this has taught our clients responsibility, as they look forward in checking their e-mail and responding to their e-Buddies.

How do you make e-Buddies work with your group?
The opportunity to communicate with e-Buddies is offered everyday as an activity. At our Day Program we offer one on one support to those clients who aren't able to type, but can communicate what they want to say via a communication device called a DYNABOX. We enlarge letters and make them bold for those who have trouble seeing some letters. Staff will check in with each participant to ensure that they are happy with their match and are communicating on a regular basis.

What have your group members gained by participating in e-Buddies?
As a whole each client has gained friendships and communication skills. By participating in this program, each person is able to communicate with someone outside of their normal group of friends. It gives each person the ability to learn about other parts of the world and other people.

Thank you to Dalepresha and the participants from ALIVE for sharing their thoughts about their involvement in e-Buddies!
