Best Buddies Arizona Celebrates Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day with Makeovers at Barney's New York in Scottsdale

On September 25th, 2010 the world celebrated Eunice Kennedy Shriver day by committing acts of love, justice, faith, hope and courage.

"The acts that take place on Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day (EKS Day) should demonstrate the impact of these values," www.eunicekennedyshriver.org. There are three components to EKS Day activities - play, build and join.

Buddy Pairs from Chaparral and Greenway engaged the idea of play by joining each other at Barney's for a pre-homecoming dance makeover.

Greeted by enthusiastic staff at the Barney's New York located at Scottsdale Fashion Square in Scottsdale Arizona, these girls were given the red carpet treatment.

They sipped water and soft drinks while makeup artists transformed them for their dances that evening. "I will remember the makeover forever; it was really fun and a great time for Melissa and I to see each other," Lindsey Eaton.

The Difference One Person Can Make

"To the world you may be just one person, but to one person you may be the world." - Brandi Snyder

This saying is not only the adopted quote by Gaither High School this year, but it reflects the friendship that Gaither's Chapter President, Taya Green, and her Buddy Karlee have formed since being matched in the Best Buddies program. Taya and Karlee were matched through Gaither's program in the fall of 2009, and they spent last school year getting to know one another and building the trust that accompanies a true friendship. It wasn't until the spring that the two really started to become close and found out they both loved to work with children and sing.

Taya attended Special Olympics with Karlee, cheering her on as she not only participated in different events but also sang the national anthem in front of a large crowd. After that, their friendship just continued to flourish. They were not spending time together because they were required to, but because they wanted to. This is the mission of Best Buddies.

In June, Taya joined Karlee's family for their vacation to Daytona Beach, where the two were able to enjoy the beach and a slumber party every night. They were also able to go to Disney World together this summer and are planning to see the Jonas Brothers in concert this fall.

Now into a new school year, Taya is excited that Karlee is serving alongside her in leadership as one of Gaither's Buddy Directors, enabling them to spend even more time together.

Their friendship is one that not only exudes the mission of Best Buddies but reveals the beauty that comes with knowing someone else's worth.
