Ask Emerson

Dear Emerson,

I just joined e-Buddies a short while ago and am still waiting to be matched.

I have trusting issues. I'm really shy and get bad social anxiety when I first meet someone and it takes a long time to warm up or open up to people. Once I know someone I am really outgoing and open to people. I do not want my e-Buddy to get the wrong impression when I freeze at the beginning of our e-Buddy relationship.

My question is: How can I make it easier for me when I get my e-mail buddy without giving my e-Buddy the wrong impression that I do not want get to know them?

Sincerely,
Really Shy

-------------------------

Dear Shy,

I'm glad to have you in e-Buddies! The beginning of many friendships can be a little awkward for both parties involved. It is normal not to want to trust someone new right away. When you are matched, be honest with your e-Buddy. If he/she asks a question that you don't want to answer, let him/her know that you are not comfortable answering the question. Start your conversations with questions about favorite foods or TV shows or anything else you don't mind sharing. Check out our Conversation Starters for more ideas.

We want all e-Buddies to be comfortable and the friendships to be mutually enriching for everyone. Chances are that your new e-Buddy will be just as nervous about making a new friend as you are.

Signing off,
Emerson
