Best Buddies International Spotlight

Summer at Best Buddies brings the start of our Best Buddies Challenge events and the Annual Leadership Conference.

The Audi Best Buddies Challenge: Hyannis Port was held on Saturday, June 4th, 2011. This Twelfth Annual Event was chaired by Tom Brady. Individuals could participate in a 100, 50 or 20 mile bike ride that took them from Boston through the New England countryside with a finish in Cape Cod. If cycling was not their style, they could participate in a 3K Walk or 5K Run led by Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis. The evening ended with the famous lobster clambake and a concert by Natasha Bedingfield.

The Audi Best Buddies Challenge: Hearst Castle will be held on September 10th and is chaired by Maria Shriver. Participants can choose from a 100, 62, 35 or 15 mile bike ride that takes them down the Pacific Coast Highway from Carmel to the Hearst Castle. Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis will once again be leading participants in a 3K Walk or 5K Run.

And, looking ahead; on October 22nd, individuals can participate in the Audi Best Buddies Challenge: Washington, D.C.

Best Buddies International will be hosting the 22nd Annual Leadership Conference: The Big Picture between the dates of July 22nd through July 25th. This year's leadership conference will be held at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.

Leadership conference is a once in a lifetime experience that unites student leaders with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) from middle schools, high schools and colleges around the globe. Throughout the conference, students will have opportunities to network with fellow leaders and Best Buddies staff from their own state, as well as from around the world. Students will gain knowledge in order to take effective action both individually and as part of a group for a common cause. Attendees will discover the importance of their actions, responsibilities, and energy in furthering the disabilities movement around the globe!

Highlights of this year's conference include:

  • Conference kick-off with Anthony Kennedy Shriver, founder and Chairman of Best Buddies International
  • Leadership development forums and round table sessions
  • Opening and Closing Ceremonies, featuring speakers and performers with IDD
  • Awards Ceremony celebrating outstanding chapters and leaders for the 2010-2011 academic year
  • Opportunity to make new friends from around the world
We wish our student leaders all the best as they come together at leadership conference and then afterwards as they work to manage their chapters and create quality friendships.
