Ask Emerson

Dear Emerson,

We were in computer class the other day and my teacher told us to please send an e-mail to our e-Buddies. She wrote on the board to send the e-mail to the address ebuddy@ebuddies.org. I was really confused. If we're all sending our e-mails to the same address, how do I know that my e-Buddy is actually getting it, and not someone else? Can't I just send it to their actual address? Hopefully you can explain this to me.

Sincerely,
Curious in Connecticut

-------------------------

Dear Curious,

You ask an excellent question. Even though your entire class is sending their e-mails to the same address, they are indeed going to the right e-Buddy! We have a wonderful system that I will explain. When a person joins e-Buddies and is approved to participate, they are entered into our E-mail System. Once that happens, we find an e-Buddy who has something in common with you. Once the two of you are matched, you are linked in our system. That means that the two e-mail addresses you both registered with are connected. So even though you're sending it to ebuddy@ebuddies.org, they are still getting the e-mail.

We don't exchange actual e-mail addresses because we like to keep the e-Buddies program safe. Because you are linked in our system, it is very important to always e-mail your e-Buddy from the address you signed up with. Sometimes people create new e-mail accounts. If you ever do, you have to let someone at e-Buddies know, so we can make a new link in our system. We wouldn't want anyone to not be getting their e-mails! Thanks for the great question, Curious in Connecticut.

Signing off,
Emerson
