e-Buddies in Action!

Periodically, we are happy to take the time to highlight a school or agency that is involved in e-Buddies. Our hope is that this will be an opportunity to share some of the challenges and triumphs encountered through group participation in e-Buddies!

This edition we spoke with Joan from Hudson High School in Massachusetts. We thank her for her efforts to bring e-Buddies to her students.

How long has your group been involved in e-Buddies?
Hudson High School has been involved with e-Buddies for 3 years.

How many members are currently matched with e-Buddies?
We currently have 10 students matched in an e-Buddies friendship.

What are some key challenges you have faced and overcome?
The biggest challenge is keeping kids interested when they don't get responses from their e-Buddy. Some students have been through a number of e-Buddies which can get discouraging. However, at least 4 students had the same e-Buddy for a long period of time, more than 2 years, which is very gratifying.

How do you make e-Buddies work with your group?
We build time into our weekly school schedule to write to our e-Buddies. The whole group goes to a computer lab once a week and spends an hour or so on this task.

What have your group members gained by participating in e-Buddies?
The members of my group have gained a great deal by this experience. They practice social skills interactions and feel great about having an online friend. They also practice a great deal of academic skills as well as speech and language skills, including writing, reading, editing and using technology. e-Buddies has been an excellent addition to my curriculum.
