All of your e-Buddies questions answered here!

Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, "The only way to have a friend is to be one." In the spirit of those inspiring words, Ask Emerson is a feature designed to help you be the best friend you can be. Each month, we will select a question or two for response. Send your questions to eBuddiesComments@bestbuddies.org.

Dear Emerson,

My e-Buddy always asks me when we can meet. I've told him that e-Buddies are not allowed to meet in person, but he is very insistent. What should I do?

Dear Only Online,

You did the right thing by telling your e-Buddy that you are not allowed to meet in person. You should probably keep telling him that every time he brings it up. Mention how much fun it is to have a friend only through e-mail.

You could also find out if there is a Best Buddies office in your buddy's state. You can find out where Best Buddies offices are at www.bestbuddies.org. By putting your buddy and/or his family and support staff in touch with a local Best Buddies office, he could have the opportunity to pursue that in-person friendship he desires.

Also suggest your buddy get involved in other activities through his local Arc, Special Olympics, or other organizations. You could help him do research on the Internet.

By presenting your buddy with options, you can help him see how he can have the best of both worlds: an e-Buddy and an in-person friend!

Signed,
Emerson
