Best Buddies Spotlight
By Ginney Robertson

During the Best Buddies All-Staff Conference held in early January, our entire staff was fortunate to attend an advance screening of the new movie I Am Sam. The film, about a man with mental retardation trying to maintain custody of his 7-year-old daughter, has several connections to Best Buddies.

In the film, a couple of Sam's friends are people who actually have mental retardation. One such person is Joseph Rosenberg, a member of Best Buddies Jobs in Los Angeles, California. Also in the film is Brad Allan Silverman who is a member of L.A. Goal with Joseph. These two actors worked with Sean Penn (Sam) and Michelle Pfeiffer (Rita Harrison) and many others to create a very real to life film.

The Tuesday before the film was released to theaters (January 25, 2002), several e-Buddies staff were invited to another screening of the film sponsored by Special Olympics International. This event was attended by almost 450 students, with well over one third of those students currently enrolled in Special Education courses. After viewing the film, the students were asked to discuss it with a special panel. This panel included Tim Shriver from Special Olympics, a Special Olympics Athlete from Washington, D.C., Kristine Johnson, one of the film's writers, Richard Solomon, the film's producer, Sean Penn, Brad Allan Silverman, and Joseph Rosenberg. Not only was our staff able to attend a very important event for Special Olympics, we were also able to bring the e-Buddies word to more people.
