Dear Emerson,

I've just been matched with my e-Buddy, and I'm so excited! But, I'm not sure what to write in my e-mails, or how long to make them. Can you help?
- Anxious to Make a Good Impression

Dear Anxious,

Glad you asked! Take time to get to know your e-Buddy. Keep your first few e-mails on the short side - say, two paragraphs of a few short sentences each. Ask two or three questions, and tell one or two things about yourself. Take cues for your next e-mail from your e-Buddy's response.

A first e-mail could go something like this:

Hello! I'm so glad we are going to be e-Buddies. I use e-mail all the time at work because I don't have a computer at home. I'm looking forward to getting e-mail from a new friend. How often do you use e-mail?

I live in the midwest, in a rural area. I'm really glad spring is finally here. I like to play softball, and my company team is just getting started. What sports do you enjoy playing?
Making a new friend is fun, but it can take some time before you really get to know one another. Let the process happen, and keep asking one or two things each e-mail, as well as responding to what your e-Buddy tells you. Before you know it, you'll be fast friends. If you feel like things aren't going well, or your e-Buddy doesn't answer you, please let us know at
