What is e-Buddies

e-Buddies is an e-mail pen pal program that provides safe opportunities for e-mail friendships between people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their peers without intellectual and developmental disabilities.

e-Buddies is a Best Buddies International program. Best Buddies is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Computers and the Internet are an important part of social inclusion. e-Buddies provides opportunities for computer literacy and friendship for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Educational Benefits

e-Buddies is a fun and safe way for your child to make a new friend as well as develop skills in the following areas:

  • Computer skills
  • Communication skills
  • Reading and writing skills
  • Social skills

By participating in e-Buddies, people are more motivated to learn. People that are involved in e-Buddies are more interested in spelling and typing correctly. The e-mails go to friends and participants receive positive reinforcement by getting an e-mail in return.

Social Inclusion

People with intellectual and developmental disabilities are not always given the opportunity to develop meaningful relationships outside of their families and the people paid to support them. e-Buddies allows participants to connect with a peer in a one-to-one friendship. Often, after graduating from school, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities have fewer chances for social interactions. The Internet can become the main way these individuals keep in touch with family and friends.

Sign your child up for e-Buddies

To participate in e-Buddies you will need:

  • Regular access to a computer with Internet
  • Time to use e-mail at least once a week
  • An e-mail address

Your child will be matched with a peer volunteer from elsewhere in the country. Once matched, s/he will be asked to exchange e-mails with her/his e-Buddy once a week for the duration of one year. e-Buddies participants also have access to our online community where members can come together and discuss their favorite topics.
